Decades of collecting and organizational work are involved in the creation of this Gallery. To all the artifacts gathered for the new gallery, the collection of foreign art of the National Gallery of Arts has been added, also donations by private persons and of the 1300 years of Bulgaria Fund. As a general architectural outline, the building was designed by the Viennese architect Schwaberger in 1884 – 1885.
On three floors of total expositional area of 4 000 sq. m, just a part of more than 3 000 artifacts property of the Gallery are exposed. The chronological scale of the collection is extended from Greek Antiquity (4-3 century BC), to the most contemporary artistic movements worldwide, and the geographic scope comprises Europe, Asia and Africa.
