The National Museum of Natural History affiliated with the BULGARIAN ACADEMY OF SCIENCES еis a scientific institute in Sofia and it is the richest museum of natural history in the territory of the Balkan Peninsula. The national Museum of Natural History was founded in 1889 as a museum of natural history of the ruling prince Ferdinand I of Bulgaria.
There, both animate and inanimate nature in Bulgaria and abroad: over 1 million specimens of stuffed animals, and plants, and minerals. The expositions of the National Museum of Natural History include more than 400 species of mammals, more than 1200 species of birds, many amphibians and reptilians, hundred thousands of insects and other invertebrates, as well as fossil specimens (bones, bone fragments and entire skeletons). There are also many types of minerals and about 1200 kinds of herbarium specimens of the flora and fauna of Bulgaria. The National Museum of Natural History is the first and richest museum of the kind in the Balkan Peninsula.
