St. Nicola and St. Pantaleon Boyana Church, known by its medieval frescos was included in the List of World Patrimonies under the auspice of UNESCO.

Several building stages can be detached in the temple of Boyana. In X – XI century, a small cross-vaulted church, innovated in XII century. In XIII century, to the western façade of the old church, a narthex was attached and, adjacent to it, a small chapel was built. In the middle of the 19th century, a two-floor atrium was built, named St. Nicola and St. Pantaleon. This church was active until 1954.

The Boyana Church is unique by its diversity, colour solutions and the deep psychological interpretation of the images. The style of the frescos of 1259 is connected with the traditions of the Art School of Tarnovo of XIII century. The unknown artist followed the classical iconography. His pictures are bright and saturated and his images: vital, rich in spiritual nuances the portrait characteristics of non-clerical persons is underlined. This innovative approach classifies the St. Nicola and St. Pantaleon Temple in the list of the world cultural and historical heritage.
