The St. George Church in Sofia is one of the first Christian temples in the world, which is absolutely preserved. It was built during the zenith of the antique city of Serdica, at the end of 3rd and the longest part of the 4th century, when it became the capital of Dacia Mediterranea province, and later: one of the favorite cities of the emperor Constantine the Great. He used to frequently visit Serdica and to rule the huge empire from there. According to some sources, the emperor used to say “Serdica is my Rome.”

Serdica was also one of the most important religious centers of the Roman Empire when, in 343-344, the famous Council of Serdica was held with the participation of the clergy of all the provinces of the enormous state. Probably, the St. George Church played an important role during this event.
