In 1928, at the suggestion of Vladimir Vazov, the Mayor, a decision to found a city museum was made. Initially, it combined the purposes of a city museum, library and record storage. Together with the National Museum, the Military Historical Museum and the Church-Archeological Museum, it is one the oldest museums in the territory of the capital.
The long-time unsolved problem with the permanent exposition of the Museum found its solution by the Resolution of the Metropolitan Municipal Council dated 1998, to adapt the building of the Central Municipal Mineral Bath for Museum of Sofia, with the active presence of mineral water.
